There is an old Sunday school song which on rare occasions I'll sing to the congregation (I sing to them from time to time) when the mood is right. The first part of the song goes like this:
"When the Spirit of the Lord is in your heart,
You can dance like David danced.
When the Spirit of the Lord is in your heart,
You can dance like David danced.
You can dance, you can dance,
you can dance like David danced.
You can dance, you can dance, you can dance like David dance!"
It may not mean much to you just seeing the words without hearing the actual melody, but trust me this song is powerful. It denotes two aspects of the Christian faith that are primary yet important to review in challenging times: one, the distinct difference between happiness and joy, and two what is possible with God. I'll explain.
The pictures on the side are of St. Clare's "The God Squad." Not an original name (most especially in the diocese of California) but with very original young people. As you can see, the young people are dancing and they are doing so with out prodding from me. This, in my opinion is pure joy. Unlike happiness which often depends on the condition our situation finds us in, joy is pure elation no matter what condition we find ourselves in. And, I contend that joy is a gift from God. These young people probably have no idea that this dancing and their joy has anything to do with God....not a problem, neither do most folks.
The second point is pretty simple too. It's just this: God is not inhibited by the condition of where we find ourselves in order to bestow us with gifts. The hope that God has for you and me can find us no matter what the state we find ourselves. There is a Psalm (I can't remember right this moment which one) that says "I have never seen the righteous forsaken!" There is no season in which God's love goes dormant, God's hope rests. Therefore the joy of the Lord is my strength and these young people too.
Yours for the reign of God,
Ron
